My speech on the NZ flag

The New Zealand flag debate. In parliament our prime minister and the whole of the national party has decided to change our flag to a “New and Improved” flag. I’m here to persuade you that changing the NZ flag is a selfish idea. In my opinion changing the flag is not only a waste of valuable money, people are also getting ignored by parliament, but is disrespectful to our soldiers who fought under our current flag. I feel that as a country we need to look at all the needs of our country rather than the wants.

The changing of the flag is costing our country $27 million of our taxpayers money. Now let's have a look at the needs! With this $27 million we could get for example 550 Nurses, 684 Doctor rangers, 554 Physiotherapist, 545 Primary school teachers and 472 Police officers.

The country has had surveys done throughout New Zealand and it has come out that two thirds of people don’t want the flag changed but the government has still “invested” a few million dollars into the design of the flag. This is a waste of money as the country might not even go ahead with the changing of the flag. This shows that people are also getting ignored by the parliament. So many people have tried to protest toward their personal opinion but with no luck as they are getting ignored but they continue with the fight for what they believe in.

The changing of the flag is incredibly rude toward the soldiers who fought under our flag. They risked their lives to fight under our flag but with no reward as parliament have decided to change the flag with no respect to these soldiers.

I hope I have convinced you that changing our flag is a bad idea as we are wasting money, ignoring people's opinions and being disrespectful to soldiers who fought under our flag. I feel that as a country we need to look at all the needs of our country rather than the wants.
